A bundle of white sage wrapped with string, a palo santo stick, and a small dried flower are arranged in a beige ceramic bowl with a piece of rough quartz crystal underneath the sage, placed on a light wooden surface.

You are not sure what to make of it and where to go from here.

Maybe this is you …

You feel overwhelmed, confused, and shaken by a spiritual experience that rocked your world, and you are not even sure if the experience was truly spiritual or not. You question everything you once believed, and life doesn't make sense anymore. You feel alone and disconnected from everyone and everything.

Your old beliefs don’t serve you anymore, and you might feel betrayed, angry, and disillusioned with a religious community that once felt like home. Guilt, shame, and fear of divine punishment haunt you. You can't trust anymore after seeing the hypocrisy of those you used to respect and are looking to explore what it is that you believe—if anything.

You have trouble focusing, and your productivity has tanked. Professional relationships are strained. You feel emotionally distant from loved ones, unable to connect or share your experiences. You're afraid they won't understand or will judge you and have lost your sense of purpose and direction. You second-guess major life choices and feel stuck and uncertain about everything.

You know that there is something more to life than the eye can see, but you cannot reconcile it with your old beliefs. You need a safe space and guidance to explore what YOU actually believe, not anybody else. You are looking to find meaning and purpose in your life.

The spiritual experiences and concerns I work with

Spiritual experiences arrive in many forms. The work I do most often includes:

Near-death experiences (NDEs) — the profound, often life-changing events that happen during medical crises, accidents, or other close brushes with death. NDEs frequently leave experiencers with an altered sense of reality, identity, and purpose, and a difficulty finding anyone who will take the experience seriously without explaining it away. NDEs are an area of my published research and ongoing professional involvement.

Other spiritually transformative experiences (STEs) — mystical states, awakening experiences, deep meditation experiences, and other non-ordinary states that change how you understand yourself and the world.

Spiritual emergence and spiritual emergency — periods of intense psychospiritual transformation that can feel destabilizing, overwhelming, or impossible to integrate without help.

Terminal lucidity and end-of-life experiences — the unusual phenomena that sometimes occur near death, in the dying person, or in those accompanying them. This is also an area of my published research.

Religious trauma — harm from religious environments, communities, leaders, or teachings, including spiritual abuse, high-control groups, and the long process of leaving a faith.

Faith transitions — leaving, changing, or rediscovering a religious or spiritual path, and the grief and identity work that come with it.

Spiritual integration — the work of bringing spiritual experiences, however unusual, into a coherent and livable life.

What it could be like.

Imagine how it would feel if confusion and overwhelm would gradually fade and reconnecting with yourself and others feels possible again.

Negative emotions and disillusionment can be replaced by a sense of purpose. Imagine a life in which guilt, shame, and fear cannot control you anymore. How would you feel being able to trust yourself and develop your own connection to your higher power?

Imagine a life where you can concentrate again and feel more present, a life in which relationships feel more authentic as you learn to set boundaries and communicate your needs. How would it feel if your sense of purpose and direction came back and guided your life choices? Would you feel more confident, grounded, and at peace with yourself and your path?

Here’s what we’ll do together.

How therapy for spiritual and religious issues works

Together, we will start to make sense of your experiences. We will explore ways to integrate your spiritual experiences into your daily life. You'll get the tools and support to heal and grow. You'll have a safe space to process your experiences without judgment.

Confusing thoughts and overwhelming emotions should become clearer as we explore your challenges from a meaning-focused perspective. How would it feel to make sense of what happened and find healthy ways to cope?

Imagine a life in which you trust yourself again—a life full of self-awareness and confidence. Discover your own inner wisdom and strength and make decisions that align with your values and goals. Get ready to align yourself with a spiritual community that fits you.

Rediscover your sense of purpose and meaning and build a life that feels authentic and fulfilling. With commitment and courage, you can move towards integrating your past experiences and create the life you want.

  • Yes. Spiritual emergence — and at its more intense end, spiritual emergency — can feel overwhelming, destabilizing, or impossible to share with anyone who hasn't been there. Together, we'll work on grounding, integration, and finding the meaning and direction that the experience is asking of you. I bring transpersonal training and ongoing involvement in the field to this work.

  • I have training in transpersonal counseling — a more neutral term for experiences that go beyond the rational mind. Transpersonal counseling acknowledges the existence of a soul or spiritual dimension and works to integrate it with therapy for the mind. I have published research on near-death experiences and terminal lucidity in the Journal of Near-Death Studies, serve on the Academic and Research Committee of the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS), and am a member of the Spiritual and Religious Values Committee of ASERVIC. I have been on my own path of self-exploration for many years and bring perspective and life experience to this work.

  • Yes. NDEs are welcomed in my practice, not pathologized. If you've had an NDE and don't know where to bring it, this is a place where it belongs. (For more on my background in this area, see the FAQ above.)

  • These are welcome here. Transpersonal experiences come in many forms, and many people have had them without anyone safe to talk to. We can explore what the experience meant to you, how it has shaped your life, and how to integrate it.
